A lucky San Diego gas station customer is nearly $420,000 richer after snagging a winning Mega Millions ticket, lottery officials announced. The near-miss ticket, sold at Chevron Extra Mile located at 3774 Main St. in San Diego, matched five of the six numbers in Tuesday night's multi-state drawing.

Although the ticket fell short of the grand prize by one number, the winner won't be crying over spilled milk. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the prize is worth $419,367. Meanwhile, California’s peculiar pari-mutuel payout laws keep them from winning the flat $1 million that similar tickets fetched in Arizona and Florida.

The lack of a total match means that the jackpot has swollen to an estimated $331 million for the next drawing, according to California Lottery officials. The winning numbers for Tuesday's drawing were 26, 28, 36, 63, and 66, with the Mega number being 15. This jackpot has been elusive, rolling over for the 12th consecutive time without all six numbers being matched.

The odds of hitting the Mega Millions jackpot are staggeringly steep at 1 in 302,575,350, but this doesn’t deter hopefuls from buying tickets with dreams of striking it mega-rich. The California Lottery also reminds players that the overall chance of winning any prize is somewhat more reasonable, standing at 1 in 24.
