A bicyclist is behind bars after he reportedly struck a senior woman in San Francisco's bustling North Beach area and bolted, authorities said. The 36-year-old male suspect was nabbed following the Wednesday afternoon incident that left a 65-year-old pedestrian with life-threatening injuries.

SFist reported that the hit-and-run occurred near the Broadway and Columbus Avenue intersection. According to San Francisco police, the victim was walking in a crosswalk when the accused zoomed down on his bike, hit her, sent her tumbling to the ground, and then fled without looking back.

Police have not disclosed the method of how they caught up to the bicyclist, but the densely populated time and locale of the crime suggest that witnesses may have played a role. The woman was swiftly transported to a local hospital following the collision, which occurred around 3:15 p.m., CBS News San Francisco recounted.
