In a less than sober joyride that veered onto the wrong side of the law, a South San Francisco man's Saturday escapade landed him in cuffs after officers caught up with a swerving Ford truck, complete with two flat tires. According to the Colma Police Department's latest "Misdemeanor Monday" report, 50-year-old James Gillanders was busted for DUI, evading arrest, and hit-and-run.
The Colma PD officers were patrolling the 1700 block of Hillside Boulevard, around 8:44 pm last Saturday when they spotted Gillanders driving on the wrong side of the road. Despite the officers' attempts to pull him over at the intersection of Hillside Boulevard and Sand Hill Road, Gillanders, with the two flat tires, refused to comply, erratically taking his Ford truck down the road. Eventually, just before hitting Lawndale Boulevard, he stopped.
Once detained, officers quickly picked up the scent of alcohol and noticed the clear signs that Gillanders was under the influence. "While speaking with the male, Officers detected the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his person, and the male displayed the objective signs of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage," detailed a social media post from the Colma Police Department.
It emerged that prior to the chase, Gillanders had been involved in a collision in the 1200 block of El Camino Real and had decided to flee the scene. Having turned a traffic violation into a small-scale manhunt, Gillanders was seized and handed a citation. With the promise to appear in court, he was released to a local hospital, and his vehicle was towed.
