Springfield's streets are marginally safer today after local police confiscated a loaded gun from a teenager, barely old enough to drive. According to reports from the Springfield Police Department's Firearms Investigation Unit, a 17-year-old male was arrested yesterday afternoon after he was found with the weapon.
The bust went down near Dickinson Street, where detectives, acting on a tip, spotted the young man and a companion, a 15-year-old boy, entering a vehicle. A search revealed the firearm tucked away in a fanny pack, ammo included, ready to fire. Authorities have since taken the 17-year-old into custody while his younger accomplice was released; no charges have been filed.
According to a report on the Springfield Police Department's website, Sergeants Christopher Hitas and David Robillard led the operation. Their quick actions are part of ongoing efforts to reduce youth violence in Springfield.
The suspect's identity remains a secret, protected by laws for minors, even those involved in violence.
