A late-night swim at Bare Hill Pond ended in tragedy when a swimmer went missing and was later found dead. The incident, which took place near Barba's Point, prompted a massive response from local emergency services. According to the Harvard Police Department, the Nashoba Regional Dispatch received a 911 call at 12:28 AM today, reporting that a swimmer had suddenly disappeared about 250 feet from the shore after quickly opting to brave the water.
Efforts to locate the individual involved multiple emergency services, including Harvard Fire and EMS, who were swiftly dispatched to the scene. Access to the site was achieved via a trail behind Bromfield School, leading straight to Barba's point. The Harvard Police Department confirmed the response in a statement and informed us that the District 8 Mutual Aid Dive Team was engaged immediately, pulling together resources from neighboring fire departments and rescue units.
The divers were supported by boats from Lunenburg, Sterling, Rutland, Barre, Leominster, Fitchburg, and West Boylston Fire Departments. Airborne assist came through the Harvard Public Safety Drone Team, significantly extending the reach of the search across the pond's waters.
At approximately 2:09 AM, the search came to a harrowing conclusion when divers recovered the body of the missing swimmer. The Harvard Police Department announced the completion of the recovery operation and extended our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. They also took the chance to remind the public to always adhere strictly to safety protocols when near or in bodies of water. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning is ongoing, and the Police Department has assured that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
