Tragedy struck a Tennessee community when 10-year-old Asher Sullivan, the son of Rutherford County's Director of Schools, Dr. James Sullivan, died following a harrowing incident involving a storm drain. After being swept into a storm drain during severe weather on May 8, Sullivan's son passed away nearly 10 days later, as confirmed by a Fox 5 Atlanta report.
Jim Sullivan, in a heartbreaking account shared on Facebook, detailed that his son had one remaining brain stem reflex which ultimately ceased. Asher's vitals became unpredictable and he succumbed to his injuries, but the decision to donate his organs was a testament to his selflessness, a quality he exhibited by being an organ donor.
Numerous community members, including students and teachers from Asher's school, gathered to honor his memory and show support for the Sullivan family. According to WKRN, Asher's fourth-grade teachers from Christiana Elementary described him as "an amazing student" and recalled his ability to uplift his peers with his humor. Additionally, the local leagues organized a heartfelt gesture, requesting the community to place bats out and share photos using the hashtag #bats4asher, as stated in a tribute on their Facebook pages.
Driven by an impulse to help after severe thunderstorms, Asher and other children were reportedly playing in the water when he became trapped in the storm drain in what climaxed into a community's nightmare. The severe weather conditions on that fateful day had prompted a Tornado Emergency in parts of Rutherford County. Unfortunately, other lives were also claimed during this event, including a child and a pregnant woman in a deadly house fire caused by a lightning strike in Lawrenceburg, as WDBJ7 reported. Asher's parents have requested privacy as they grapple with their profound loss.
Amid the grief, the community rallied around the Sullivan family. Rutherford County Schools issued a statement expressing their collective heartbreak and confirming their commitment to support the family in the upcoming difficult days, emphasizing the unity and empathy that defines their community. Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland extended his condolences as well, assuring the family of the continued prayers and support from the community. Asher's legacy now includes a final act of kindness, promising life to others through organ donation, celebrated by an honor walk at Vanderbilt Hospital as a hero.
