In a move that could open doors for scores of high school seniors, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) and the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) announced an extension to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) submission deadline for the Tennessee Promise scholarship program. Eligible students now have until August 1 to file their applications, ensuring their chance to secure critical college funding remains intact for the fall semester.
Encountered by students who struggled with submitting their FAFSA due to a new application that was launched in January, the extension aims to provide a lifeline for those still navigating the process. According to a statement from the THEC/TSAC, "The release of the new FAFSA has inadvertently been an obstacle to certainty around many students’ fall college decisions," said Dr. Steven Gentile, THEC/TSAC Executive Director. He continued, stating the goal is "to assist students and families in completing the FAFSA before fall enrollment."
This last-minute reprieve comes after THEC/TSAC received a generous $1 million aid from the Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC) under the U.S. Department of Education's FAFSA Student Support Strategy initiative. This grant is a game-changer for THEC’s "TN FAFSA Frenzy" campaign, fueling statewide efforts to boost FAFSA completion rates among future college attendees.
With the "TN FAFSA Frenzy," THEC/TSAC has planned to organize multiple events that provide support while launching communications campaigns to promote FAFSA completion. Made possible by the ECMC award, staff resources aimed to aid institutions have been promised by the THEC/TSAC, facing a challenge posed by the new FAFSA that makes it difficult for students and families to tackle alone, ensuring the process is manageable and financial assistance within reach.
Reaching its decade landmark, the Tennessee Promise scholarship program is a pillar in the state's commitment to education, offering high school graduates a shot at a technical certificate or associate degree tuition-free. It fills the financial gaps not covered by other aid sources, underscoring the importance of completing the FAFSA for students pursuing higher education.
Dr. Gentile reaffirmed this commitment by saying, “THEC/TSAC will continue to work diligently to ensure that every student in Tennessee can access higher education through the completion of the FAFSA.” For those in need of assistance with the FAFSA, upcoming events and resources can be found at CollegeforTN.org/FAFSA or by calling 1-800-342-1663.
