A hail of gunfire erupted near a South Memphis apartment complex just after the stroke of midnight, leaving three wounded in an incident that has thus far yielded no suspects, according to the Memphis Police Department.
Police responded to the 1100 block of Race Street, where a security guard discovered a woman laid out on the ground with gunshot wounds next to a 2017 Nissan Altima, as FOX13 Memphis informed. The female victim was transported to Regional One Health in critical condition. Police also said officers at the scene found a sobering array of 56 spent rounds from both rifles and handguns, plus three live rounds, near the Nissan.
Investigators received a tip that led to the discovery of two additional shooting victims at Regional One. One man, injured in the right knee, recounted to police that he was jolted awake by the sound of gunfire and shot while fleeing his car, according to WREG. The second man, found with a thigh wound, offered no details to officers.
A witness provided a chilling account of the scene, stating they heard "15 to 20 gunshots" before spotting two or three vehicles peeling away and speeding north up Race Street, as reported by Action News 5. At present, Memphis Police have not released any information on potential suspects as the investigation continues into the shooting.
