A Paulding County home was engulfed in flames on Memorial Day, leading to the tragic death of a 62-year-old woman, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. The fire broke out in the early hours, with firefighters rushing to a residence on Legend Drive after receiving a distress call at about 10:30 a.m.

The first responders were greeted with thick black smoke billowing from the home, as detailed by Lt. Steve Mapes of Paulding County Fire and Rescue. The husband of the deceased was able to quickly inform the firefighters that his bedridden wife was still inside, trapped on the second floor. "He did confirm his wife was inside, she was trapped and there was a lot of black smoke coming from her bedroom," Lt. Mapes told FOX 5 Atlanta.

Firefighters battled to navigate through the smoke and flame to reach the unconscious woman. They managed to extract her from the rear bedroom and brought her to the front yard, where attempts were made to save her life. Despite all rescue efforts, the woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into what sparked the fatal fire is currently ongoing. Paulding County Fire and Rescue are working jointly with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office and the State of Georgia’s Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the cause of the incident. "It’s tragic any time somebody loses their life," Lt. Mapes shared the sentiment in an interview with FOX 5 Atlanta, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

As the inquiry proceeds, the identity of the victim has yet to be officially released to the public. The community of Paulding County has been left shaken by the loss of one of their own on a day otherwise marked for remembrance and honor.
