Woodbury residents looking to step up in the event of disaster can now join the revamped Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), a city program that aims to train locals in disaster preparedness and response tactics. The training, following guidelines from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's CERT curriculum, is the latest incarnation of the initiative after the previous Volunteer Emergency Response Team (VERT) was phased out last year.

In the wake of unpredictable calamities such as fires, floods, and blizzards, CERT prepares volunteers to be the first line of defense before the arrival of professionals. It's a chance to make a real impact, "By volunteering with CERT, participants will gain the skills and knowledge to help neighbors in their time of need," said the City of Woodbury in a recent announcement.

The program is a call to action for residents aged 18 and over and is tailored for those who can fully participate in the training exercises. Not only will the sessions prepare individuals to handle emergencies effectively, but they also provide a platform to meet others in the community who share a passion for safety and preparedness.

Applications for the next CERT training are currently open, and Woodbury's Emergency Manager, Kyra Crepin urges those interested to apply. For those wanting to join, no previous experience is necessary. "CERT training provides participants with the confidence needed to manage emergencies at home, work, or in your neighborhood," Crepin detailed, underlining the program's broad applicability. To learn more or to apply, individuals can visit the CERT page or contact Crepin directly.
