On Monday, tragedy struck Route 93 in Methuen as a wrong-way crash claimed the lives of two individuals. Massachusetts State Police confirmed that the incident occurred around 2:10 AM when a 2020 Toyota Rav4, driven by a 53-year-old Quincy resident, barreled northbound in the southbound lanes, causing a fatal head-on collision with a 2021 Toyota Camry.
The Camry's driver, a 21-year-old also from Quincy, died at the scene, as reported by the Massachusetts State Police official news release. Following the initial crash, the Camry collided with a third vehicle, whose operator survived without injuries, in the southbound lanes still heading north.
The operator of the Rav4 was rushed to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead. For about three hours, the highway was shut down as authorities managed the scene, which snarled early morning traffic and left drivers seeking alternate routes.
State Police Troop A spearheads the ongoing investigation, alongside the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. During the closure, Methuen Police Department, along with Fire and EMS services, aided the State Troopers, ensuring a prompt and ordered response to the chaotic scene. As the investigation continues, no further details have been released regarding the cause of the collision or the identities of those involved.
