In what officials are now calling an unfortunate turn of events, a shooting incident in Troup County that resulted in injury to two siblings has been ruled accidental. Troup County Sheriff's Office confirmed the incident that occurred on June 4 on Bartley Road in LaGrange involved a 15-year-old boy accidentally shooting his 10-year-old sister followed by himself. Both children were rushed to Wellstar West Georgia Hospital with serious injuries.
The Troup County Sheriff’s office dispatched deputies to the 1600 block of Bartley Road around 10:40 p.m. after receiving reports of the shooting. The deputies discovered the injured juveniles and performed life-saving measures until first responders arrived. According to FOX5 Atlanta, the Sheriff’s investigators interviewed the 10-year-old girl and concluded there was no criminal intent behind the incident.
The sheriff's office initially contended with the possibility of an intentional act, but further investigation revealed the tragic nature of the situation. "The Sheriff’s Office is asking the community to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers," a statement from the Sheriff's Office indicated.
While the 10-year-old's condition has stabilized, the 15-year-old remains in critical condition. The sheriff's office, in an update, said "It was simply just a tragic accident in a case where he accidentally shot his sister and himself," as reported by 11Alive. Further details on the case are pending as the investigation continues. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
