Brentwood is gearing up for a change in its policing leadership, with Assistant Police Chief Jim Colvin set to step into the role of Chief of Police in March 2025. As reported by the City of Brentwood Tennessee official website, Colvin, a seasoned member of the Brentwood Police Department (BPD) since December 2004, will succeed Chief Richard Hickey following his retirement.
City Manager Kirk Bednar has expressed his confidence in Colvin's capabilities. "I have complete faith that Jim Colvin is the right person to lead the Brentwood Police Department for years to come", Bednar stated. He highlighted Colvin's known professionalism, integrity, and most importantly, his compassion. This transition represents a crucial moment for the community's law enforcement, as the upcoming chief has over two decades of experience with the BPD, moving up the ranks from a patrol sergeant to his current role as assistant chief.
Jim Colvin's policing career is marked by significant experiences including the positive relationships he's fostered in the community. He was prominently featured in a city-produced video where he recounted the development of a friendship with a young man he once arrested. Colvin, originally from Chicago before relocating to Memphis, brings a blend of urban sensibilities and southern charm to his policing philosophy, shaped by his formative years and education at the University of Tennessee, Martin, where he earned his bachelor's degree.
In a move confirming his commitment to excellence in law enforcement, he will attend the prestigious FBI National Academy this July, becoming only the third from BPD to do so. According to statements by the assisting chief, Colvin expressed his gratitude for all the support he has received within the department and from the city leadership. "I am honored to represent the department in the Chief's position and look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Brentwood," Colvin said, as per the City of Brentwood, Tennesse.
With a department history that dates back to 1971, Colvin stands on the shoulders of predecessors like the inaugural chief, Howard Buttrey, and those that followed including Ricky Watson and Jeff Hughes. This passing of the baton to Colvin represents a continued legacy of committed law enforcement officers ensuring the safety and well-being of Brentwood's residents. The father of three looks to the future with an optimistic view of leading a department that has grown and evolved in its service to the community.
