As the temperatures soar in Austin, locals are bracing for a weekend that promises nothing short of scorching heat, with today's forecast indicating a sunny day reaching highs near 96 degrees, and heat index values potentially tipping over the 100 mark, reports the National Weather Service. Residents can expect light winds that may gust up to 20 mph, offering scant relief from the heat.
Adding to the environmental concerns, today has been designated an Ozone Action Day for several counties including Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson, due to high levels of ozone expected to form under the day's conditions, this according to KXAN. Friday saw heat indices reaching a stifling 106° at La Grange, with Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the San Marcos Municipal Airport not far behind at 105° the ozone paired with the soaring heat indices underscores an urgent need for residents to take precautions to protect their health and minimize activities that contribute to ozone formation.
As the weekend continues, the mercury is slated to hover in the upper 90s, with a slight chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms making a brief appearance in the southern Hill Country on Sunday evening. However, high pressure currently centered in the northwest Gulf is expected to gradually weaken and drift away, potentially allowing for low chances of isolated rain showers moving into next week.
Yet, any respite from the dry conditions seems fleeting, as forecasters from the National Weather Service anticipate that the rain, while offering a brief interlude, will quickly give way to another strengthening high pressure system by mid-week, bringing back the familiar dry weather and high temperatures in the mid to late 90s.
