The Bay Area braces for another scorcher today, but don't sweat it too much because a cooldown is predicted to roll in by Friday. While we wait for the mercury to drop, folks are advised to find creative ways to stay cool and remember that, despite the heat inland, beaches can be dangerous with hazardous wave conditions, according to the NWS Bay Area. So, if you're seeking refuge by the shore, stay vigilant and safe out there.

The National Weather Service San Francisco CA has been keeping tabs on the wild temperature ranges within our region. "there's as much as 36F degree difference in temperatures from 83F on Mt Tam (within the lower level temperature inversion - a result of large scale sinking motion with the high pressure system) vs mid 50s to upper 40s near sea level (due to a chilly maritime influence) in Marin county at 2 am," their Area Forecast Discussion notes. While the ridges simmer, sea-level areas enjoy a cooler breeze. The onshore winds predicted to pick up today should usher in some relief, particularly by the coast, and could lead to trimming back the Heat Advisory that's currently in place.

The weekend brings a continued cooling trend and a reprieve from the inland heat. Daytime coastal temperatures will dip below typical June warmth, while inland spots can expect temperatures to settle around normal for this time of year. The brief response could be just that, brief, with forecasters eyeing another possible surge in heat by the mid of next week. And while the skies overhead should clear at the coastline, inland flyers can anticipate typical visibility conditions, with VFR giving way to some patchy coastal fog.

Mariners and beachgoers should take heed, as conditions out at sea are set to be choppy. "Expect breezy northerly winds to persist through the day before gradually easing into Friday," the Area Forecast Discussion advises. These winds, paired with rough seas, could make for hazardous outings for small crafts. Swells are also anticipated to subside by the weekend. However, the NWS has issued a Beach Hazards Statement effective through this evening due to moderate period swell that could see smashers of 8–15 feet. Beachgoers are cautioned against unpredictable, and potentially dangerous sneaker waves, reminding everyone to keep an eye on the sea for a good while before setting up camp on the sand and to always follow lifeguard instructions.
