Yesterday, a vigil was held for 13-year-old Aayden Hayes who was fatally shot at Red Caboose Park in Bellevue on May 29. According to FOX 17, a cross was erected in his memory, with community members gathering to honor the young life taken too soon. Speaker at the event, Metro Nashville Police said the tragic occurrence erupted from an altercation between groups of teenagers that escalated to gun violence, leaving his sister injured and Aayden dead.
At the vigil, attended by dozens while some held candles and others released balloons, Aayden's sister, An'Raya Hayes, spoke courageously about her brother. "Aayden, if it wasn't for him, I really wouldn't be standing here right now," An'Raya told the crowd, expressing the grief wrought by the daily haunting memory of the incident that night, as WSMV reported. Vigil attendees included not only family and friends but also community activists and city leaders, signaling a wider collective mourning and a stand against gun violence.
Hope Leach, the mother of Aayden, stood amongst the crowd at Red Caboose Park, describing her son as the light of their world. "That was my baby. I can say so much about him," Leach said, her voice carrying the weight of a parent's unspeakable loss. The vigil, as reported by NewsChannel 5, also served as a platform for solidarity and a public commitment to address the safeguarding of community children.
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell commented on the necessity of community collaboration to address the root causes of such juvenile violence. "Our office is working with first responders, Metro Schools, community partners to continue making data informed decisions to see what is working here and in other cities, and letting that drive our targeted approaches,” he stated. It was at the hospital where the harsh reality dawned: Aayden had died, marking an end to a young life and the beginning of a quest for communal healing.
