Early yesterday morning, Boston police officers from District B-3 encountered a vehicle violation that turned into a foot chase and the recovery of a firearm in Mattapan. According to the Boston Police Department, officers patrolling Talbot Ave spotted an Infiniti sedan parked improperly in a no parking zone.
The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop after the car pulled over without using signals. When a passenger exited the vehicle, shouting and trying to obstruct the officers, one officer approached the driver as the passenger became confrontational. Suddenly, the driver attempted to drive away, nearly causing injury to an officer who was partially inside the vehicle near the window. Shortly after fleeing, the driver crashed into another parked vehicle, and both the driver and a passenger fled on foot. The officers gave chase but ultimately lost visual contact with the suspects.
During a search of the area where the suspects had been last spotted, a firearm was discovered and later identified by detectives as a loaded Smith & Wesson 9 Compact. Demetrius Steed, a 30-year-old resident of Dorchester, was identified as the operator of the vehicle, incurring multiple charges, including negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stop for police.
The description of the suspects was broadcast by officers, leading to an intense search. The firearm was found, with one 9mm round chambered and seven rounds in the magazine. This occurred in close proximity to where the suspects disappeared. While the immediate threat was neutralized, the incident shed light on the challenges faced by officers during traffic stops, which can unexpectedly escalate, putting both law enforcement and public safety at risk.
