One driver suffered severe trauma and was airlifted by Boston MedFlight to a Level 1 trauma center in Boston, while the second driver was taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital, according to Boston 25 News. Crash Reconstruction Unit Called to the Scene
The department's Crash Reconstruction Unit was deployed to document the scene and gather physical evidence, a step Massachusetts police procedures reserve for collisions involving fatal or near-fatal injuries, severe property destruction, or complex multi-vehicle physics, per guidance outlined by PowerDMS. The unit's work led to a temporary right-lane restriction on Route 9 East at Oak Street before all lanes reopened, according to the Shrewsbury Post. Boston MedFlight, the nonprofit critical care transport service that flew one driver to Boston, operates its air ambulances as flying intensive care units staffed by critical care nurses and paramedics trained in advanced trauma stabilization. The consortium service typically delivers high-acuity patients to major Boston medical facilities, including Mass General and Beth Israel Deaconess, according to Boston MedFlight. Its involvement in Friday's crash underscores how serious the initial trauma assessment was at the scene.
A Corridor Known for Rush-Hour Congestion
The crash happened squarely within the Friday afternoon peak period that the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization has flagged as a chronic trouble spot. Heavy traffic density during those hours increases turning and merging friction at intersections like Oak Street.
Route 9, also known as Worcester Street through Wellesley, is classified by MassDOT as an Urban Principal Arterial under state jurisdiction, with a posted speed limit of 50 mph along its commercial stretches. In response to safety concerns on the corridor, MassDOT has undertaken the Route 9 Connected Corridor initiative across 37 intersections between Worcester and Wellesley, installing adaptive signal controls and connected vehicle technology intended to improve traffic flow and reduce collisions, according to the agency's Highway Safety Improvement Program.
