Last Sunday night, a routine patrol turned into a significant drug bust in Brentwood. As per the Brentwood Police Department's statement, a police sergeant, while on Highway 4 near Lone Tree Way, spotted a car with expired registration tags around 11:30 PM. The situation rapidly escalated from a simple traffic stop to much more.
The driver, 56-year-old Gerald Smith of Berkeley, was discovered to have a suspended license due to a previous DUI, along with the open container of alcohol in his car. But that was just the tip of an illicit iceberg. Brentwood PD's routine check quickly unraveled into a discovery of a cache of illegal items: a loaded firearm, drugs packaged presumably for sale, a digital scale, and a significant sum of cash.
Smith, with a past that includes a conviction, was found illegally in possession of a gun, among other contraband. Brentwood Police Department's thorough search added suspicion of drug dealing to the list of charges Smith now faces. The seriousness of the offense is compounded by his status as a convicted felon, placing him in violation of several statutes relating to firearms and controlled substances.
The encounter led to Smith's arrest on multiple charges, including being a felon in possession of a gun and possession of drugs for sale. He was subsequently transported to the County Jail for booking.
