A substantial blaze in Brockton has dealt a severe blow to the local business community after taking hold overnight on Main Street. According to NBC10 Boston, firefighters were dispatched to the scene at roughly 1:30 a.m., battling flames that engulfed a building housing a soul food restaurant, a convenience store, and a beauty salon, among others. The report also indicates that a residence behind the affected building sustained minor damages including melted siding.
In a scene echoing moments of peril, it has been reported that no rescues were necessary as two individuals from the basement managed to escape the encroaching flames on their own. "Initially when they went around to the back of the building they saw two people coming out of the the basement," Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli informed NBC10 Boston. "Heavy fire was throughout the entire ceiling space." The structures' businesses were closed at the time of the fire, and although a woman was seen being taken away by ambulance, no significant injuries have been declared.
Having to contend with not only flames but fortified access points, firefighters faced additional hurdles due to metal pull-down grates on the building. "The building had metal pull-down grates so they had to force through those to get inside and for people inside," noted Nardelli in coverage provided by Boston 25 News. An adjacent building was also threatened by the fire, prompting fire teams to take preventative measures to protect it from the spreading disaster, even as smoke infiltrated and damaged the residence.
Complicating the situation for Brockton's firefighters was the existing weather conditions. The already strenuous task was amplified by heightened evening temperatures. "You have to understand these firefighters have been working all day, going to multiple calls throughout the day, now this at 1 in the morning they’re already beat up from working all day and the humidity is still in the air," Chief Nardelli remarked. The intense and prolonged effort took its toll, as Boston 25 News reports that a firefighter was hospitalized after their leg became entangled in an aerial ladder. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation amid ongoing efforts to clear remaining hot spots.
