A 15-year-old boy met a tragic end this past weekend in Cedar Park, Texas, when an afternoon of swimming with friends turned fatal. According to a KVUE report, the teen is believed to have drowned at a lake behind the Twin Lakes Family YMCA, where he was allegedly struggling to stay afloat after jumping from a cliff.
Local law enforcement and rescue teams were deployed after receiving distress calls regarding a missing swimmer at the lake authorities searched the waters for several hours, and the Williamson County Sheriff's Office Dive Team eventually recovered the body. "I want to take this opportunity to express our deepest sympathies to the family," Lt. Justin stated in the article by KVUE. "This is a horribly tragic incident and we are doing everything we can with the family to provide support in this horrible incident," Miller added.
In the wake of the incident, Laura Arredondo, chief marketing officer for the YMCA of Central Texas, shared her condolences, saying, "We want to express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the young man," as per KVUE's coverage. Admitting the area where the drowning occurred was not part of YMCA programs or under their supervision at that specific time.
As confirmed by Hoodline, no lifeguards were on duty during the time of the tragic event, which occurred despite repeated warnings about the dangers associated with open water swimming these warnings are especially pertinent during the summer months when the heat drives dozens to seek relief in local bodies of water and the incident has prompted a community reminder about water safety practices. The Texas Game Wardens are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the drowning.
