Passengers on the CTA Red Line experienced a jolt of fear as a robbery unfolded on a moving train, the Chicago Police Department said. According to a community alert issued by the CPD, two men are being sought in connection to a robbery incident that occurred on May 28, 2024, near the 15 W. 79th St Red Line station. Officials say the suspects took advantage of a sleeping passenger, rifling through his belongings and then escalating to violence when confronted.
Described as African American males, between 25 and 35 years of age, the suspects reportedly punched the victim in the face, head, and back with closed fists after he woke up and confronted them about searching his bag. One was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a black vest, the other sported long dreadlocks paired with a white multi-colored short-sleeve shirt.
The CPD has released images of the individuals believed to be responsible for the assault and is currently seeking the public's assistance in identifying them. The safety alert from the police urges citizens to "always be aware of your surroundings" and to "dial 9-1-1 to report suspicious activity immediately." Commuters are reminded never to chase a fleeing assailant and to instead provide any information to the police.
