Chaos ensued in the streets of Lakeview on Sunday afternoon when two Chicago police vehicles, both rushing to respond to a call, collided and subsequently hit a civilian car. The crash occurred as a westbound police car on West Addison Street struck a northbound squad car at the 3500 block of North Southport Avenue, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. One of the patrol cars careened into a Honda SUV that was attempting a turn.
The impact of the collision sent all the involved parties to nearby hospitals, the Chicago police confirmed. Though specifics regarding the number of officers or civilians injured weren't immediately available, it was later released that everyone involved had been treated and subsequently released from medical care. Details surrounding the call to which the officers were responding were not disclosed. The collision was affirmed to occur at roughly 5:14 p.m., based on statements obtained by local authorities.
Confirmation of the two police cars colliding was also echoed by a post on social media, where the terse announcement of the crash at Southport and Addison, was made on an account with an accompanying link to a brief article, found at x.com. This post offered no additional information about the cause of the collision or the aftermath but served to alert the community of the incident.

The collision raises concerns about the dangers emergency responders can sometimes pose to themselves and others while on duty. Investigations typically follow such incidents as departments aim to learn and, ideally, prevent future occurrences. The Chicago Police Department has yet to release further details about the crash or any potential changes to their response protocols that might be considered to better ensure public and officer safety.
