Early Sunday morning, violence interrupted the routine flow of nightlife on Chicago's Far South Side, as a 30-year-old ride-share driver found himself the target of gunfire from within his own vehicle. According to the Chicago Tribune, the incident occurred in the Burnside neighborhood, near the 900 block of East 91st Street. The driver, who was shot in the back of the neck by a passenger, subsequently crashed into a parked vehicle.
As Chicago Police investigate the harrowing situation, the victim's condition hangs in balance; he remains in critical condition at UChicago Medical Center. Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting have yet to be unraveled by detectives, and as of now, no arrests have been made. With the shooter still at large, the ride-share community is once again reminded of the underlying risks associated with their service.
The CBS report on the shooting notes that the incident took place shortly before 2 a.m., after which the police responded to the scene. The passenger, described as the offender by police, fired at the driver while inside the moving vehicle, leading to the subsequent collision with an unoccupied parked car before it came to a stop.
