Rideshare drivers in Chicago's 3rd District are on high alert following recent armed robberies targeting their community. The Chicago Police Department has issued a warning to drivers in the wake of two incidents that occurred on June 3rd. According to the police alert, both robberies took place in the early hours, one at 2:30 a.m. on the 6700 block of South Jeffrey Boulevard and the other at 4:00 a.m. on the 7200 block of South Phillips Avenue.
In these troubling events, ride-share drivers expecting a typical fare were met instead with life-threatening situations. The offenders, described by the victims as two African-American males around 5'04" to 5'05" and weighing approximately 120-130lbs, were wearing dark-colored clothing during the robberies. When the victims arrived to pick up a supposed passenger, these individuals were reported to have brandished a weapon and demanded personal property.
The police have guided rideshare operators on how to stay safe. Drivers are advised to always be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity immediately. In the unfortunate event of a confrontation, the police recommend remaining calm and trying to note any unique characteristics of the assailant, such as scars, limps, or other identifying marks.
Anyone with information about these robberies is urged to contact law enforcement to aid in the investigation.
