A construction worker sustained severe burns on Tuesday when an underground fuel tank exploded at a Hallandale Beach gas station. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews responded swiftly to the incident, which occurred just before noon, according to WSVN.
During the course of what was supposed to be a routine access to the tank, the workers began cutting through the concrete when vapors within the tank ignited, leading to an abrupt explosion that injured one worker who suffered second and third-degree burns over approximately 50% of his body he was transported to Aventura Medical Center promptly following the accident. Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes, while the surrounding area was left with a crater measuring around 50 feet in diameter.
Officials have temporarily closed the gas station to conduct an excavation project and to ensure public safety, as confirmed by WSVN's report, and it was fortunate that no other injuries have been reported at this time. The South Florida community is reminded of the ever-present dangers that workers face, even when undertaking seemingly controlled scenarios such as this.
