According to KPTV, wildlife officials have issued a temporary closure of the trail following reports of a cougar behaviorally engaging with a human, an event that decidedly ups the ante in terms of potential wildlife encounters in the area.
In response to the sighting, the Forest Service acted promptly to close down the Angel's Rest trail for safety reasons. “We saw the signs and that everything is closing, and we didn’t want to interfere with that,” stated Zhana Lukyanova, a visitor from Alaska, who managed to quickly squeeze in a hike before plans were called off due to the approaching evening and awareness of the situation. This experience reinforces the need for hikers to remain remarkably flexible when planning treks in such areas.
Meanwhile, local officials doubled down on the gravity of the situation. “The cougar has not been spotted again, but officials are closing the trail as a precaution,” reported KATU.
