Hikers in the Columbia River Gorge found their outdoor plans curtailed after a cougar sighting near Angel's Rest Trailhead. According to KPTV, wildlife officials have issued a temporary closure of the trail following reports of a cougar behaviorally engaging with a human, an event that decidedly ups the ante in terms of potential wildlife encounters in the area.
In response to the sighting, the Forest Service acted promptly to close down the Angel's Rest trail for safety reasons. “We saw the signs and that everything is closing, and we didn’t want to interfere with that,” stated Zhana Lukyanova, a visitor from Alaska, who managed to quickly squeeze in a hike before plans were called off due to the approaching evening and awareness of the situation. This experience reinforces the need for hikers to remain remarkably flexible when planning treks in such areas.
Meanwhile, local officials doubled down on the gravity of the situation. “The cougar has not been spotted again, but officials are closing the trail as a precaution,” reported KATU. This serves as a stark reminder that when wildlife and weekend warriors cross paths, caution must be the guiding principle – and sometimes, that means putting those adventure plans on hold.
Adding to the narrative, KOIN indicates the closure extends to the connecting trailheads, a move executed in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Oregon State Parks. They collectively emphasized public safety in a statement: “The trails have been closed as a matter of public safety, Forest Service officials with the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area stated.” In these instances, to suddenly find oneself subject to the dictates of wildlife management is to come face to face with the unpredictable nature of outdoor recreation.
Furthermore, officials advised the public to stay alert and provided guidance on how to act should they encounter a cougar: remain calm, maintain eye contact, and slowly back away, always giving the animal an escape route. This sobering advice underscores the importance of not only enjoying nature's splendors but also respecting its inhabitants and the protocols put in place for everyone's well-being.
