A graduation ceremony in Southfield, Michigan, was disrupted Tuesday morning when a physical altercation broke out involving a woman who allegedly assaulted her child's father's new girlfriend with a shoe. The incident, which occurred during the Glenn Levey Middle School commencement at Triumph Church, led to the arrest of the 41-year-old mother from Eastpointe, according to The Oakland Press.

Southfield Police responded to the scene after initially receiving a call, which suggested a possible stabbing at the church located at 15600 J.L. Hudson Drive. However, upon arrival, authorities ascertained that the confrontation was not a stabbing but an assault with a shoe. "There was an argument during the 8th grade graduation ceremony — we had a mother who was upset about another female who was the new girlfriend of the man whose child they had in common," Southfield Police Lt. Shane Russell told The Detroit News.

The victim — identified as the current girlfriend of the graduate's father — sustained minor face injuries from the assault. WWJ Newsradio's Darrylin Horne reported that the altercation escalated after a verbal dispute, leading to the suspect allegedly striking the victim with a shoe.

The suspect was detained and taken to the Southfield Detention Center without further incident, reports indicated, whereas the victim was treated for minor wounds. No other injuries were reported, and officials have not provided additional details about the type of shoe involved in the altercation. At this time, charges against the mother have not been announced, and the church has not issued a statement regarding the incident.
