A young man from Essex met a tragic end this past Monday, June 3, after his vehicle collided with a tree and subsequently caught fire on Route 202 in Pelham, Massachusetts. The Massachusetts State Police reported the 19-year-old was driving a 2013 Toyota Siena along the Daniel Shays Highway when the accident took place at roughly 7:15 p.m. Despite quick action from responders, the teenager suffered fatal injuries.
According to the Massachusetts State Police news release, Troopers, along with emergency medical services, worked swiftly to rescue the driver from the burning vehicle. He was immediately transported to an nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The victim's identity has not yet been released to the public.
The investigation is currently underway by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police, along with the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the Worcester County State Police Detective Unit. These efforts are made to determine the exact cause of what now stands as a stark reminder of the fragility of life on the road.
For approximately three hours following the mishap, both the north and south lanes of Route 202 were closed to facilitate emergency response and preliminary investigation. State Police were assisted by Pelham Police Department, Pelham Fire and EMS, and Belchertown Fire and EMS during this time.
