Two squad cars, one marked and the other unmarked, collided in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago on Thursday night resulting in injuries to five Chicago police officers and one civilian, according to local authorities. The collision occurred just before 7:15 p.m., with the marked car striking the unmarked one as it proceeded south on Racine Avenue, reported the Chicago Tribune. Following the initial crash, the marked car further impacted a Cadillac that was navigating north.
The aftermath of the collision necessitated medical attention for those involved; all five officers were taken to local hospitals, with at least one sustaining serious complications as revealed by the Chicago Fire Department to ABC7 Chicago. Four officers were listed in good condition at Holy Cross Hospital, while another was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in a markedly more grave state.
Additionally, a civilian pedestrian, a woman caught near the accident site, sustained injuries and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. Meanwhile, the driver of the Cadillac chose to refuse medical help at the incident's locus. The condition of the Chicago streets post-collision spoke to the force of the event—littered with debris, a crumpled unmarked police SUV hugged a pole, its airbags painting a solemn picture of the evening's abrupt violence.
Even as investigations are still pending with no immediate additional information, witnesses painted a stark image of a woman rushing to move a young child out of danger's way on a sidewalk nearby—illustrating the potential for even greater tragedies narrowly averted. The intersection, now strewn with the detritus of such urgency and emergency, serves as a reminder that the unexpected may unfold at any moment, under any circumstances, altering the immediacy of life in an urban heartland.
