Troy Weaver, once steering the ship for the Detroit Pistons, has reportedly docked in a familiar harbor as the new senior advisor for the Washington Wizards. ESPN broke the news, highlighting Weaver's return to his roots as the D.C. native reenters the basketball realm in the nation's capital. Notably, his move will reunite him with former Oklahoma City Thunder colleagues - Wizards president Michael Winger and GM Will Dawkins.
Despite having his hands on the Pistons' helm from 2020 to 2024 and inking a contract extension in 2022, Weaver opted to leave before the extension could even commence. The departure was labeled "amicable" by Trajan Langdon, the Pistons' freshly minted President of Basketball Operations, as obtained by The Detroit Free Press. Upon his exit, Weaver swiftly turned down a scouting department position to openly seek new opportunities.
The Washington Wizards, Weaver's new home team, haven't exactly been tearing up the hardwood, utterly missing the playoffs cut since the 2020-2021 season. According to Sports Illustrated, their last playoff memory is a less than stellar first-round exit at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Last season, the Wizards notched just barely one win over the Pistons, a team that finished with 14 victories. With that, they've remained outside the top ten in the Eastern Conference, paving a challenging road ahead for Weaver to navigate and to surely be expected to make some waves in the Wizards' rebuilding efforts.
