
An officer-involved shooting in Clayton County is under investigation after 18-year-old Hakim Al-Nas was fatally shot, as announced by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The incident, which occurred at an abandoned home located at the 3200 block of Chippewa Drive, led to Al-Nas being taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the situation began with a 911 call alerting to a suspicious person reported at approximately 4:30 p.m., correcting earlier reports that the call came in at around 6:30 p.m.
Upon their arrival, Clayton County Police Department officers discovered two individuals climbing out of the back window while two others remained inside the home and during the encounter, Al-Nas attempted to flee the scene and was shot multiple times by one of the officers; a handgun was recovered from the scene according to the GBI's release. The GBI has not provided additional details regarding the shooting or the handgun found at the site of the altercation, noting the investigation is still very much in its active phase.
No officers were reported injured during the incident and the GBI has vowed to continue updating the public with pertinent information that can be divulged without compromising the integrity of the ongoing investigation. The nature of the confrontation leading to Al-Nas's death has not been fully clarified at this time, and the GBI has not yet released the identity of the officer involved in the shooting or any potential body cam footage that could shed light on the events preceding the fatal encounter.
