Big Boi showed up unannounced at a Soccer in the Streets scrimmage in East Point and started handing out jerseys — not just any jerseys, but a glow-in-the-dark kit built around Outkast's 1996 album ATLiens. The surprise marks 30 years since the record helped put Southern hip-hop on the map, and it lands in the same Atlanta suburb where Big Boi and André 3000 first crossed paths as teenagers.
Outkast is celebrating that 30th anniversary by giving back to Atlanta youth soccer, according to WSB-TV. Big Boi delivered the new jerseys during the East Point scrimmage, surprising the Soccer in the Streets team, signing autographs and meeting with players in person. The station reports the moment carries extra weight because East Point is where Big Boi (Antwan Patton) and André 3000 (André Benjamin) first met as teenagers at Tri-Cities High School in the early 1990s, according to Goal.com.
A Jersey Built From the Album's Visual World
Andre 3000 and Big Boi partnered with Mundial, the UK-based soccer culture magazine, to create the official ATLiens jerseys now worn by Soccer in the Streets youth teams, per the station's report. The kit incorporates elements of the album's iconic artwork along with details celebrating Atlanta, and it draws inspiration from the record's broader visual universe. Goal.com notes the design leans into 1990s retro styling — an oversized collar, a boxy fit, repeating A side taping, and a glow-in-the-dark logo on the front.
This isn't the first time Outkast has used a soccer jersey to mark an anniversary. The ATLiens kit is the group's second collaboration with Mundial, following an October 2025 release of a Stankonia F.C. capsule that celebrated the 25th anniversary of their 2000 album Stankonia, according to the Atlanta Daily World. Mundial now sponsors Soccer in the Streets, and the Outkast x Mundial ATLiens jersey is sold worldwide, with a portion of proceeds from the limited-edition release benefiting the nonprofit.
East Point's Ties to Outkast's Legacy
Soccer in the Streets provides free soccer programs and other opportunities for underserved youth across metro Atlanta, and the organization's teams are based in East Point, Georgia. Kaseem Ladipo, executive director of Soccer in the Streets, said soccer continues to grow as a connector of people in Atlanta, per the station's account. Ladipo said he was thrilled that Big Boi shared his passion for youth on the organization's platform, and added that Soccer in the Streets was honored and grateful that Outkast chose to give back to East Point and invest in young athletes.
Soccer in the Streets youth teams will wear the ATLiens jerseys during the 2026 season, per the same report. Ladipo said the young players will carry the spirit and legacy of being ATLiens as they compete. Established in 1989, the nonprofit runs free soccer training, youth development programming, and leadership workshops across the metro area, according to MARTA, which helped build the organization's East Point field directly across from the East Point MARTA station in October 2019.
Southern Rap's Defining Album Turns 30
ATLiens, Outkast's second studio album, was released on August 27, 1996, by LaFace Records and Arista Records. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and later earned double platinum certification from the RIAA, according to background compiled from Wikipedia. The lead single, Elevators (Me & You), reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart after its July 1996 release.
ATLiens helped propel Outkast and Southern hip-hop to another level, and that ascent traces back to a defining moment a year earlier. At the 1995 Source Awards in New York City, André 3000 responded to boos from the crowd after Outkast won Best New Rap Group by declaring, “the South got something to say,” a line still remembered as a turning point for Southern rap, according to Okayplayer.
Soccer's Growing Footprint in Atlanta
The East Point giveaway also arrives as Atlanta gears up to host eight matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a backdrop that has fueled broader regional enthusiasm for the sport, per UATL. Soccer in the Streets has built much of its model around removing transportation barriers, launching what MARTA describes as the world's first transit station soccer pitch at Five Points MARTA Station in 2016 before expanding its League of Stations network to West End, East Point, Lindbergh, Kensington and East Lake. That transit-linked setup lets underserved youth travel across metro Atlanta to train and compete without needing a car.
Hoodline has followed Outkast's Atlanta ties before, including city-backed grants tied to StationSoccer expansion ahead of the World Cup and Big Boi's own 404 Day community event downtown. André 3000 was not reported as present for the East Point scrimmage, but the joint effort between both Outkast members, Mundial and Soccer in the Streets reflects the duo's shared, ongoing investment in their hometown's next generation.
