A historic staple for travelers on Cape Cod faced an emergency early Tuesday morning as a fire erupted at the Dan'l Webster Inn & Spa in Sandwich. According to NBC Boston, the incident commenced around 12:55 a.m., with flames seen at the rear of the building. A vigilant employee, who noticed the inferno on a security camera, responded by pulling the fire alarm and physically alerting the guests by knocking on their doors.
The Sandwich Fire Department reportedly had to evacuate about 50 individuals from their rooms due to the fire which primarily damaged the inn's kitchen and part of the roof, as per information from Boston 25 News. The guest accommodations were spared from the flame's grasp, the fire did necessitate a temporary shutdown of the kitchen facilities.
The inn took to Facebook to communicate with the community and their guests. "Thankfully, the damage to our building is minimal. However, as a precaution, our food and beverage operations are temporarily closed." said the inn, as mentioned by NBC Boston, ensuring their clients that rooms and the Beach Plum Spa remain in service. The inn's management expressed their gratitude for the support and understanding of the public and promised updates regarding the reopening of the dining facilities.
The fire chief relayed that the responders were able to subdue the fire, but not without leaving the kitchen unusable for an undetermined duration. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported amidst the evacuation and response. The origin of the fire is under scrutiny, with investigations ongoing to determine the cause of this night-time disturbance.
