The Houston community is reeling from the news of a hit-and-run crash that resulted in one man’s death. Houston police have reported that the male victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was fatally injured in the incident that took place late at night on May 25. It happened along the 7000 block of the Gulf Freeway service road, according to a statement obtained by the City of Houston News. The 48-year-old man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead yesterday at Ben Taub General Hospital.
Officers from the Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Division and Eastside Patrol Division, Sergeant J. James and Officer L. Hernandez-Guzman, stated that witnesses described hearing a loud crash and seeing the victim on the ground. A white or silver sedan, travelling at what was seen a high rate of speed, was witnessed at the scene, fleeing after the collision without providing assistance or stopping. At this point, the driver remains unidentified and at large.
Emergency responders were quickly on the scene, with paramedics from the Houston Fire Department attending to the injured man. Despite their efforts and the subsequent medical care provided at the general hospital, the efforts were to no avail, and the man's injuries led to his death.
With the suspect yet to be identified, Houston police are reaching out to the public for assistance. There is currently no description available of the vehicle or the driver involved in the hit-and-run. The HPD has urged "anyone with information on the identity of the wanted driver or in this case" to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4065, or to offer information anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, as the vehicle did not stop and in an unknown direction fled the scene.
