In the 12700 block of Wisteria Park Drive, officers discovered Whitefield lifeless, riddled with bullet wounds. Shortly thereafter, a near hospital called regarding Blackburn who had also been shot and was later pronounced dead by medical staff. Following an investigation, it was determined Blackburn had been linked to the original crime scene, found equated with a bullet-hole-riddled vehicle and several witnesses on the 12100 block of Richmond avenue.

According to law enforcement officials, witness statements played a key role in pinpointing the suspect. Initially described as a black male in his early 20s driving a gray Dodge Charger, the investigation eventually focused on Whiting.
