In an unsettling discovery, six pugs with severe deformities were found abandoned across Clatsop and Columbia counties, prompting a criminal investigation into what officials are calling a deliberate act of animal abandonment. Clatsop County Animal Control pointed out that the pugs, appearing to be dumped along rural roads near major highways, share striking similarities in size, condition, and temperament, suggesting they were intentionally left in remote areas to fend for themselves.
"The boys that are coming in are in a little worse shape than the girls, they have horrible, horrible skin infections, one of them has an ulcerated eye," said Brian Tennison, the president of Pacific Pug Rescue, a statement obtained by KATU. Tennison also told KPTV about the physical challenges these dogs face, with bowed femurs so severe that their kneecaps don't align, making it difficult for them to walk and causing them considerable pain.
Investigators believe the circumstances point to a breeder abandoning the pugs because of their deformities, and the rescue organization fears these cases hint at a bigger problem of over-breading leading to health issues in the animals. The specific deformities in the pugs' back legs link them to the same litter, giving weight to the theory that this was an act of breeder dump.
Authorities feel that these unfortunate pugs were disposed of with little regard for their wellbeing, a cruel solution chosen over more humane options, Tennison lamented on the heart-breaking situation expressing, "It is frustrating, and oftentimes infuriating to see what these dogs are put through when they have no say about anything in their lives." In these incidents, rather than seeking euthanasia from a vet or a shelter, people opt for abandonment as a less costly and more convenient, though inhumane, approach.
The investigation continues as local authorities are asking anyone with information about the pugs or their abandonment to come forward and assist in the case, as the search for those responsible is ongoing. Meanwhile, Pacific Pug Rescue is caring for the dogs, although their deformities render them largely unadoptable and represent an enduring challenge for the rescue group.
