As the saga of the NFL's Washington Commanders sale concludes, titans of industry have butted heads in a high-stakes auction, and Jeff Bezos, the Amazon magnate, found his wallet surprisingly light. According to a recent ProFootballTalk report, in the battle of the billionaires, it wasn't chicanery that kept Bezos from claiming the Commanders, he was "simply outbid" by another affluent suitor, Josh Harris, with a bid of $6.05 billion.
The Financial Times paints the broader context of Bezos’ recent investment plays, noting a series of setbacks in the nation's capital. Despite his financial heft and influence, it appears that not everything is for sale, even for Bezos. As stated in the same report "[O]ver the past 18 months, several of Bezos’s big Washington bets have been derailed, blocked or overtaken by events — culminating in the upheaval at the Post.” Specifically, the Washington Post, which Bezos owns, has faced a tumultuous period under the leadership of his appointee Sir Will Lewis, sparked by attempts to stanch the bleeding of $77 million in losses last year, causing stiff resistance in the newsroom.
The quest for NFL ownership is nothing if not competitive. RealGM's coverage confirms that Bezos was outflanked financially by Harris, an accomplished sports mogul who already owns the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL's New Jersey Devils. Bezos's experience in this sporting theatre is a blunt reminder that sometimes, the bid speaks louder than the name.
Harris himself is no stranger to the fickle fortunes of sports acquisitions, having tasted defeat in a previous attempt to buy the Denver Webpage, according to The Spun. They note, "Harris had previously bid on the Denver Broncos, but ultimately wound up losing out to Walmart heirs Rob Walton and Greg Penner.” Yet persistence paid off for Harris, as he navigated past Bezos in a record-setting purchase of an American sports franchise. Bezos, nevertheless, is not one to retreat easily, and as The Spun speculates, another run at NFL ownership is likely in the cards for him. Notoriously, the NFL gridiron is a place for comebacks, and Bezos may still have a play to make in this exclusive owners' game.
