Two years after a string of roadway violence shook Austin, justice seems to inch closer for the families of two victims who lost their lives in what authorities described as unrelated road rage incidents in November and December of 2020. KXAN reports that 25-year-old Manuel Huerta has been sentenced to 35 years for the murders of 20-year-old Omar Munguia and 21-year-old Miranda Gloria Lopez. According to court documents obtained by KXAN, the sentence will be served concurrently, with Huerta already having spent over three years in custody.
In a detailed account of the police investigation leading to the arrests, KVUE details how surveillance footage and anonymous tips were crucial in identifying the vehicles involved in both cases. Alongside Huerta, 33-year-old Jonathan Zavala has been charged in the shooting of Lopez. While detectives endeavor to piece together the chain of violent events, their investigation suggests these two men could be connected to as many as 11 other incidents in Austin.
The first tragic incident occurred on Nov. 25, 2020, leaving Munguia fatally wounded while he was driving to the store. Lopez met a similar fate a month later on Dec. 26, succumbing to her injuries three days after being shot. Both incidents were characterized by the sudden eruption of deadly aggression on Austin's roads. Recognizing Huerta's previous brush with the law unrelated to the shootings, authorities arrested him, later discovering Zavala in a stolen vehicle, with the weapon allegedly used in Lopez's shooting.
As Austin reels from these road rage horrors, detectives have not closed the book on this chapter of the city's history. According to the police, additional charges are possible, and the net widens for potentially more suspects. With tireless pursuit lined with hope, the Police Department has shared a list of other cases they believe may be tied to Huerta or Zavala, asking the public to come forth with any information that may draw the lines connecting these sobering dots of roadside tragedies.
