A recent incident on I-40 East highlighted the dangers encountered by first responders on our nation's highways. On Sunday afternoon, a Knoxville Police Department cruiser was involved in a multi-vehicle accident while conducting a traffic stop near Alcoa Highway. According to WVLT, dashcam footage captured the moment a minivan, merging out of the right lane, collided with the parked police vehicle.

The driver of the minivan was cited for failing to maintain lanes and for the failure to move over for emergency vehicles. In a statement obtained by WBIR, KPD underscored the "real dangers for first responders, especially on the interstate." The same sentiment was echoed by the department as they urged motorists to "ALWAYS pay attention to the road, and to please slow down and move over for emergency vehicles."
Though no serious injuries were reported, the officer whose cruiser was struck received treatment for minor wounds at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, and was later released, as noted by WATE. The minivan driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation, with a KPD spokesperson suggesting that the individual may have been suffering from a medical emergency at the time of the accident.
