A water main break caused disruption in North Austin, leading Travis County ESD No. 2’s crew to tackle an urgent repair on West Wells Branch Parkway as per reports by CBS Austin. The incident, which unfolded Friday afternoon, prompted the authorities to urge the public to steer clear of the 1720 block to facilitate the complex task of fixing the broken conduit. The extent of the repairs needed and the projected completion timeline remained uncertain at the time.

Later that evening, several agencies, including Wells Branch MUD District, converged on the scene when a large volume of water erupted due to the compromised 24-inch line, with the spectacle unfolding near the Milan Apartments as detailed by KVUE, who mentioned the apartments consequently lost water service, and an alert was to be issued for others potentially affected by the fiasco.

Shirley Ross, the District Manager for Wells Branch, in a statement obtained by KVUE, expressed the occasional inevitability of such incidents, "These things happen," she said, "We try to avoid them, obviously, as much as possible; they don't happen very often, thank goodness. And we just want to make the repair as quickly as possible so that our customers are not inconvenienced for very long."

An unexpected turn during the water line saga was a big rig plunging into a gaping sinkhole that the road’s washed-out patch had disguised, the driver "Ruben" recounted to KVUE, "I was getting over somebody finally let me in, and I'm trying to get over to the left," Ruben said. "And this other idiot, he came to cut me off. He was going to hit me. So, I had to get back to the right. And all of a sudden, I go into the sinkhole, it opens and cratered as I was passing through." Control of the situation was attained close to 10 p.m., with crews beginning repairs which were estimated to extend until full restoration, fortunately with no injuries reported throughout the event.

Travis County ESD No. 2 released a full statement about the event, "Today [we] responded to reports of a broken water line at the 1720 block of W Wells Branch Parkway. Upon arrival crews made contact with a boring company who was onsite. Shortly after a 18-wheeler drove through and fell into a washed out area closeby. No injuries were reported and west bound Wells Branch is closed. Representatives on scene discovered that a Crossroads Utility Services water line was impacted," as mentioned by KVUE.
