A Malden man's criminal pursuit ended last week as he was sentenced to federal prison for a heist that might have seemed scripted for Hollywood but instead played out on the grittier stage of local commerce. On Friday, June 21, 2024, John Schurko received a three-year penalty for robbing Harvard Market in Malden, armed with what turned out to be an airsoft gun—functionally benign but visually convincing enough to orchestrate a theft, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Back on a chilly evening in December 2021, Schurko's pretense of danger fooled an unsuspecting clerk as he brandished a faux firearm to commandeer cash. This marked the beginning of a series of events that would culminate in his capture in Medford, where his ill-gotten gains and the deceiving airsoft gun were discovered in a vehicle at a hotel parking lot. After pleading guilty in February to interference with commerce by robbery, Schurko, now 58, has been sentenced to follow his prison term with two years of supervised release.
District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton passed down the sentence, closing a chapter on a case that involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and several local Massachusetts police departments. "Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert E. Richardson of the Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case," acording to the U.S. Attorney's Office press release, revealing the intricate tapestry of investigation and legal wrangling required to address such deceptive criminal endeavors.
Schurko's arrest hinged on his getaway vehicle, leading to a coordinated effort by law enforcement from Malden, Medford, Billerica, Woburn, and the FBI. Justice was served more than two and a half years after the crime—a timeline that reflects the slow pace of the justice system. This resolution aims to uphold community safety and order, the core mission of these institutions.
