Early Friday morning, an incident of gun violence disrupted the comparative calm of East Memphis, leaving one man critically injured. According to Action News 5, the Memphis Police Department received reports of a shooting at around 6 a.m. near the intersection of Poplar Avenue and Perkins Extended.
The victim, whose identity has yet to be released, was discovered with gunshot wounds and promptly taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition. Although he was later released, the event evokes the ever-present specter of gun violence within our urban tapestry, officers responded to the scene on Spottswood Avenue which is preliminary indicated as the spot of the incident.
Further details emerged as a crew from Local Memphis reported significant damage to an ATC Fitness center located in the 4600 block of Spottswood Avenue, where the shooting allegedly took place. The site, marked by its shattered glass facade, became a focal point in the investigation.
Meanwhile, a FOX13 team observed police activity at a nearby Shell gas station. The station was not the crime scene, but as fragments of the morning's violence pieced together, it became clear that the true location was indeed the ATC Fitness on Spottswood Avenue.
As investigations continue, the Memphis Police Department has not released further details on potential suspects or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
