A shooting incident in Southeast Memphis has critically injured one man, as reported by Memphis authorities. On Wednesday afternoon, Memphis Police Department promptly responded to a shooting emergency at an address on Raines Road.
The response team, arriving close to 2:02 p.m., found a man with multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot at 5425 East Raines Road. Desperately attempting to provide aid, they transported the victim to Regional One Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The unfortunate occurrence led the police to advise the public to find alternative routes, as they proceeded to shut down all traffic lanes near the scene at Raines and Mendenhall, Action News 5 and FOX13 Memphis reported.
Witnesses at the scene recounted the harrowing experience as business owners nearby provided assistance to the victim. "I was in the office working and we heard gunshots from the outside,” William Meador, an employee at a neighboring shop, told WREG. Meador and his boss ran to assist, offering water and applying pressure to the wounds until emergency services arrived. Sharing his shock, Meader said, “When it first happens you get the shakes, and then after a few minutes you think, it’s just another day in Memphis. It’s just a Wednesday afternoon.”
The details surrounding the shooting suggest a carjacking gone awry. According to the victim's account, the shooter took his vehicle after the confrontation at the intersection of East Raines and Mendenhall. The young man estimated to be about 20 years of age managed to seek aid at the strip mall where Meador and other samaritans came to his rescue. With no suspect information currently available, Memphis Police are continuing to investigate the incident and have called on anyone with information to reach out to Memphis CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH, WREG reported.
