Public transportation, roadways, and bridges are slated for a financial boost in the Bay State. MassDOT has initiated a public comment period for its new multi-billion-dollar Capital Investment Plan (CIP) intended for Fiscal Years 2025-2029. The plan, unveiled by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation on Thursday, outlines a vision replete with infrastructure upgrades totaling approximately $16.5 billion over the five-year span. Among the highlights, the MBTA is set to receive over $800 million for upgrades, including new Red and Orange Line vehicles.
Residents are encouraged to actively engage and to quickly jump in, review, and comment on the CIP to ensure community voices shape which projects get the green light. Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt emphasized the importance of such feedback in a statement, noting, "This is how we know if we are missing any projects important to community members," according to the MassDOT. The funds are earmarked for a variety of projects, from railways to accessibility improvements, shaping how the Healey-Driscoll administration will allocate its transportation budget in the coming years.
Significant allocations in the new CIP plan include $772 million for the Cape Cod Bridges Program and a $370 million investment for the I-195 to Route 18 interchange rehabilitation in New Bedford. Also on the docket are numerous other roadway and rail improvements across the state, incorporating safety enhancements and multimodal accommodations.
MassDOT has made it relatively straightforward for the public to offer their input. Bay Staters can submit their comments via multiple channels including email to [email protected] or through the online CIP Comment Tool. For those preferring the traditional route, mailing comments to the Manager of Capital Planning at MassDOT's Boston office is another available means. Additionally, the department has arranged a series of regional informational meetings, both virtual and in-person, to allow for further public involvement and to ensure that people can easily reach out and convey their perspectives on the draft CIP.
With multiple infrastructure enhancements poised to take shape, the MassDOT’s open call for public commentary represents a critical opportunity for locals to influence how their daily commutes and travels might look in the near future.
