In the late hours of May 28, Massachusetts State Police made a dramatic arrest on Route 12 in Oxford. Trooper Joel Daoust, on traffic enforcement duty, identified and attempted to stop a black BMW sedan that was noticeably impaired, with its engine cowling dragging on the road. According to MSP News, after a brief disappearance on Carron Lane, the BMW reemerged and was intercepted by Trooper Daoust, who deployed his taser and physical restraint against the driver, Ryan Christian, who resisted arrest.
During the incident, Samantha Sweeny, the passenger, exited the vehicle and began tampering with items in the footwell. Both individuals, after a confrontation, were handcuffed and taken into custody. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed an assortment of illegal substances, including fentanyl and cocaine, and an arsenal consisting of a sawed-off shotgun, knives, and a short-barreled rifle, none of which Christian or Sweeny were licensed to carry.
The two were arraigned on multiple charges, including "Conspiracy To Violate Drug Law," "Trafficking in Cocaine," and "Possession of a Firearm During a Felony," as delineated by the MSP report. Additional charges for Christian highlight a history of drug-related offenses and reckless driving resulting in "Operation Of A Motor Vehicle With Suspended License" and "Assault With A Motor Vehicle." Sweeny is further charged with "Interfering With a Police Officer" and "Carrying A Dangerous Weapon."
As Ryan Christian and Samantha Sweeny face their legal reckoning, the events underscore the hazards State Troopers encounter daily.
