As rain continues to shower Miami-Dade County, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has ramped up efforts to brace for further flooding by activating the County's Emergency Operations Center to a Level 2 Partial Activation. Miami-Dade County reports the aim is to quickly to coordinate and deploy vital resources to the hardest-hit neighborhoods in the northeast, which are already battling the impacts of recent flooding.
"As we prepare for additional rain this afternoon, I’m doing everything in my power to make sure we have all the resources available and ready to deploy immediately,” Mayor Levine Cava said, emphasizing the urgency to shield residents in susceptible areas. Her precautionary measures followed last night's announcement of a local state of emergency intended to hasten the community's ability to rapidly respond during or after the storm's progression, ensuring access to state and federal aid without delay.
While most Miami-Dade County offices remain operational and continue service delivery, the rain has led to the closure of Public Libraries in Bay Harbor Islands, Northeast Dade – Aventura, and Sunny Isles Beach for the day. To assist residents amidst the deluge, all Metrorail Parking Garages are offering free parking from noon Thursday through 5 p.m. Friday, giving commuters a slight reprieve from the downpour.
Meanwhile, the weather woes have cascaded to Miami International Airport where parking garages are nearing full capacity due to a slew of delayed flights. The County advises travelers to arrive early and explore alternative modes of transportation such as rideshare, hitching a ride with acquaintances, taxi services, or public options.
