Heath Baldwin, the Michigan State University decathlon record holder and a Kalamazoo native, is officially on his way to the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. After a stellar performance at the U.S. Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon, Baldwin secured his spot on the team with a leading score in the decathlon. WWMT reports his total score was a personal best of 8,625 points, enough for him to clinch the gold and beat a seasoned field of 19 athletes.
During the intense competition, Baldwin, who passed on the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships to hone his focus for the decathlon, excelled across the board. According to a Lansing State Journal report, Baldwin threw personal bests in the 400 meters and shot put and topped the leaderboard in high jump. His 110m hurdles performance on the second day strengthened his hold on the first place, evidencing his stellar athleticism and strategy.
The competition heated up towards the end, with Baldwin's javelin throw playing a critical role in his victory. A throw of 66.69m, which scored him 839 points, along with a 4:41.87 minute effort in the 1500m, solidified his position above the competition. Baldwin now looks forward to joining his fellow teammates, such as 2020 Olympian Zach Ziemek and Harrison Williams in Paris, as they both secured their spots placing second and third respectively, as detailed by The Detroit News.
Aside from Baldwin's triumph, former Spartan Tori Franklin also made headlines with her third-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 13.72m. Highlighted by WWMT, Franklin will be waiting for the official word from USA Track & Field's Olympic team announcement to see if she will join Baldwin at the global event. With the 2024 Paris Olympics running from July 26 through August 11, both athletes could be instrumental in adding to the U.S.'s medal tally this summer.
