A tragic series of events unfurled on the Everett Turnpike in Bedford, NH, where a 52-year-old man perished after his car collided with a tollbooth and subsequently was engulfed in flames. The driver was identified by New Hampshire State Police as Scott Defreitas of Nashua. The devastating incident took place on Thursday at around 3:15 p.m., triggering a coordinated emergency response.
According to WHDH, Defreitas was pulled from his combustion-engulfed Mercedes SL 500 by responders, after the vehicle struck a concrete barrier. Despite the attempts of several witnesses who intervened to save Defreitas, "life-saving measures were attempted, but DeFreitas was pronounced deceased on scene," as reported by state police to WCVB. The tangled debris and ruin halted traffic as several lanes were closed on the Everett Turnpike Southbound, with normal flow resuming around 6:05 p.m.
The latest accident marks the third vehicular tragedy at a New Hampshire toll plaza in the past month, highlighting a worrying pattern. A man from Massachusetts met his end at the Hampton Toll Plaza over Memorial Day weekend, and another from the same state was injured at the same location in a separate accident just days before.
Stark reminders of the disaster remained visible; as per aerial footage obtained by WCVB, the burned shell of the vehicle lay motionless near the charred toll booth. Local authorities are calling upon witnesses with additional information that may aid in the investigation to come forth and aid in the piecing together of this perplexing puzzle. New Hampshire State Police specifically requests that any relevant tips be directed to Trooper Kevin Gazlay.
Tolls continue to be a fact of life for New Hampshire patrons on roads like Interstate 95, the Everett Turnpike, and the Spaulding Turnpike, where they serve as a dual testament to infrastructure's needs and potential hazards when safety measures fail to protect travelers. As investigations proceed, the cause behind Defreitas' crash, whether human error or mechanical oversight, remains under diligent inquiry.
