A tragic mishap unfolded on a Nashville interstate this weekend when a pickup truck, driven by 54-year-old Roberto Estrada, careened off a cliff, resulting in his death and injuring two passengers, including a two-year-old child. The accident happened on Interstate 65 North near the I-24 West split on Saturday morning, as reported by WKRN.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, Estrada's Dodge Ram failed to negotiate a curve, spun out of control, and plummeted down a 20-foot cliff onto the southbound side of the highway. The vehicle is said to have initially entered the grass median before the fatal descent, as per FOX17. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. and resulted in road closures while emergency services responded to the scene.
Following the crash, Estrada was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. The two passengers, a 49-year-old adult, and a toddler were also taken to Vanderbilt with injuries described as non-life-threatening, according to WSMV. The police have stated that there were no apparent signs of impairment at the scene.
Investigations are ongoing to determine what caused Estrada's pickup truck to suddenly run off the road. Meanwhile, the accident has sparked calls for a review of safety measures on this stretch of Interstate 65. The community awaits to understand more fully how such a calamity could come to pass and perhaps prevent future incidents of this nature.
